Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson as partners in Die, My Love

Jennifer Lawrence delivered one of the most talked-about performances of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival with the world premiere of Die, My Love, directed by Scottish auteur Lynne Ramsay. The intense psychological drama, based on Ariana Harwicz’s 2017 novel, received a rousing six-minute ovation. Ramsay, visibly emotional, thanked her cast before abruptly exiting the theater, overcome with feeling. The film is now in contention for the prestigious Palme d’Or, reported by Variety.

In Die, My Love, Lawrence stars as a mother unraveling under the weight of postpartum psychosis, with Robert Pattinson playing her increasingly desperate husband. Their volatile dynamic plays out in a harrowing cascade of violence, intimacy, and self-destruction. Cannes audiences were audibly shaken by Lawrence’s raw, physically demanding performance, which includes scenes of self-harm and emotional breakdown. Supporting roles from LaKeith Stanfield, Sissy Spacek, and Nick Nolte round out Ramsay’s powerful ensemble.

This marks Ramsay’s fifth feature to premiere at Cannes and her first in eight years. Known for We Need to Talk About Kevin and You Were Never Really Here, Ramsay is no stranger to the Croisette or critical acclaim. Die, My Love is also Lawrence’s Cannes competition debut, signaling a bold new chapter in her career as both an actor and producer. Though the film has yet to secure a U.S. distributor, it’s already generating buzz as one of the festival’s hottest titles.
