A highly anticipated moment for fans of the series, which ended two years ago, has finally arrived. Netflix has confirmed that a sequel film will be made, and to the delight of fans and the actor himself, the beloved Tommy Shelby, played by Cillian Murphy, will return. Murphy, still riding high from the success of "Oppenheimer," will also be producing this sequel, set in his trusted universe.
The film, which had been rumoured for some time but has only just now been confirmed, will certainly continue to explore the story of the leader of the Shelby family. However, not many details about the plot are known, except that the creator of the TV series hinted at setting it during World War II. The cast is also largely unknown, with no information on major returns or new faces.
We do know that production of the film is expected to begin by the end of the year, that Tom Harper will be the director (having directed some episodes of the first season), and that Steven Knight (creator of the TV series) is working on the screenplay and production.
Tom Harper, the British director, is well known for a multitude of successful British TV series as well as some big films over the last several years. 2018 saw him team up with Jessie Buckley to make the beloved and unique Wild Rose while the next year, we received the powerful film, starring Eddie Redmayne: The Aeronauts.
Without a release date or much information concerning the plot, we have only to wait for news regarding the sequel film.
