On the 24th of March 2022, during the 94th edition of the academy awards, something bizarre occurred that has become one of the most notorious moments in Oscars' history. While famous comedian Chris Rock is in the process of presenting, he made a joke at the expense of Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smiths' wife. After this remark, WIll Smith approached Chris Rock and slapped him in the shock of everyone attending and spectating the ceremony.
What was even more strange was that Will Smith won that same night the oscar for best actor instead of being escorted out of the venue for assault. The consequence of this action for him is his resignation as a member of the academy and a ban from attending the event for a decade.
For the 95th edition of the Oscars this Sunday, the academy event organisers are said to be prepared for anything, being quoted as saying, "It is our hope that we will be prepared for anything”. While the chief of staff for the event Bill Kramer said “we’ve opened our minds to the many things that can happen at the Oscars”.
Since this event, Chris Rock has been quiet until most recently, and he has disclosed his thought about the event and the repercussions of it on his Netflix comedy special “Selective Outrage”.
