Peacock is diving back into the mockumentary style that made The Office a cultural phenomenon with its upcoming spinoff, The Paper. Scheduled to premiere in September 2025, the new series shifts the comedic lens from the world of paper sales to the unpredictable grind of small-town journalism.
Set in Toledo, Ohio, The Paper centers on The Truth Teller, a struggling local newspaper trying to stay afloat in a digital age where print is rapidly becoming obsolete. The show introduces a new ensemble of characters facing dwindling readership, limited resources, and the uphill battle of keeping community journalism alive. It’s a workplace comedy with fresh stakes, and the same mockumentary format that fans of The Office know and love. Behind the scenes, The Paper is helmed by two comedy powerhouses: Greg Daniels, the creator of the American version of The Office, and Michael Koman, best known for his work on Nathan for You, according to People. Their partnership promises a blend of sharp satire, deadpan humor, and heartfelt storytelling.
Who will be in the cast?
Leading the cast is Domhnall Gleeson (Star Wars, Ex Machina), who plays Ned, the newly appointed publisher of The Truth Teller. An outsider with big ideas, Ned quickly discovers that reviving a dying newspaper isn’t as simple as he hoped. Starring alongside him is Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus), playing Esmerelda, the newspaper’s fiercely determined managing editor. Other cast members include Gbemisola Ikumelo, Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Ramona Young, Alex Edelman, and Tim Key, each portraying a unique and often quirky member of the newspaper staff. In a welcomed surprise, Oscar Nuñez reprises his role as Oscar Martinez from The Office, now working as an accountant at the Toledo paper, creating a subtle but satisfying connection between the two series. Though there is no official word on major cameos from other Office alumni, speculation has been rife following sightings of Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey on or near the set. Still, producers have emphasized that The Paper is designed to stand on its own, not rely on nostalgia.
Peacock has confirmed that The Paper will maintain the classic documentary-style filming technique, with the same unseen crew from The Office supposedly returning to document this new workplace and its eccentric staff. The Paper premieres in September 2025, exclusively on Peacock.
