X, Pearl, and the forthcoming MaXXXine form Ti West's horror trilogy, but what is the connection between them?
MaXXXine is set for a 2024 release and will be a sequel to 'X'. So far, not much is known about the upcoming project. However, what is known is that it is set in the 1980's and Ti West will return as director. But how is MaXXXine connected to the other two movies?
'X', released in spring of 2022, came in with a bang. Starring Jenna Ortega, Brittany Snow, Kid Cudi and Mia Goth in dual roles as Maxine Minx, an aspiring actress, who heads to rural Texas with her producer boyfriend and cast mates to make a pornographic film. But the elderly couple that own the land, Howard and Pearl (also Goth), aren’t as harmless as they may seem. Soon enough, the cast and crew of the adult film find themselves terrorized by an unlikely killer: Pearl. The slasher pays homage to its predecessors such as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) while also breathing new air into the genre.
Pearl: An Extraordinary Origin Story serves as a prequel to X, marking Ti West's return to the director's chair. While co-written by West and star Mia Goth, who reprises her role, this time the titular character is portrayed at a much younger age. Set in 1918, the film focuses on Pearl and her desire to become a big movie star and leave her ordinary life, so much so that her ambition leads her to commit heinous acts. Pearl stands. on its own feet when it comes to individuality, as much as it can while still being a prequel. Instead of continuing the love letter to the slasher genre, Pearl references Golden Age of Hollywood films such as The Wizard of Oz (1939) and Mary Poppins (1964).
In the classic style of the X trilogy, audiences can anticipate the film delving into a different horror sub-genre, undoubtedly examining the unsettling influence the film industry has on those involved. As of January 2023, the MaXXXine script has been completed, with principal photography scheduled to commence later in the year for the A24 production.
