“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” Will be a Tribute to Michael Constantine

The cast of the movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” are finally back for a third film. The romantic comedy is directed by Nia Vardalos and is set to premiere on September 8, 2023. The first official trailer has finally been released.

Not only will Nia Vardalos write and direct the movie, but she will also come back and star in the film as the beloved character Toula Portokalos. Alongside her will be co-stars that we have seen in the previous films of the franchise such as: John Corbett, Louis Mandylor, Elena Kampouris, Maria Vacratsis, Andrea Martin, Gia Carides, Joey Fatone and Lainie Kazan. However, we will also see some new faces including Elias Kacavas and Melina Kotselou.

The first film of the franchise, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”, premiered in 2002. It earned a total of $368 million worldwide over the course of nearly one year at the box office. Thereby it became the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time. The second film, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” premiered more than a decade later, in 2016. The budget for the film was $18 million and it grossed $90,6 million worldwide.

This film will be a tribute to the actor Michael Constantine (who played Toula’s father) who died in 2021, at age 94. This was shown in an Instagram post by Nia Vardalos, where she confirmed that Constantine knew he wouldn’t be able to play in the third film. She wrote in her post: “He had told me he wouldn’t be able to join us for the third film and his wish was that we go on. I wrote the screenplay to reflect Michael’s decision and will always treasure his last messages to me, hoping we were filming soon (…)”.

The trailer shows that this movie will play out in Greece for the characters to reconnect with their roots and therefore they will have a reunion there. This third film will surely have the audience filled with laughter and joy.
