Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund, director of “The Square” released in 2017 and "The triangle of Sadness” released in 2022, for which he was awarded twice the Palme d’Or, was nominated on the 28th of February as the next President of the Jury for Cannes Film Festival 2023. In both films, he has been praised for his social-conscious satire that has explored class division in the “Triangle of Sadness” and the contemporary art world in “The Square”. These projects have made him one of the most socially thought-provoking directors today. It will be the first time in the history of Cannes that the role has been given to a filmmaker that has won the award the previous year. In addition, it will be the first time since Ingrid Bergman 1976 that a Swedish filmmaker will take on this role.
Upon the announcement, he has been quoted saying that he is “happy, proud, and humbled to be trusted with the honour of Jury president for this year's Competition at the Festival de Cannes”. He aims as jury president he aims to select fims that entertain and underline the importance of films as tools for social commentary and discussion. Much like his own award winning projects.
