Sebastian Stan‘s Edward learns to be careful what he wishes for in the trailer for A Different Man.
What you want...
Edward (Stan) is affected by neurofibromatosis on his face, which he believes hinders his confidence. He tends to keep to himself, with Ingrid (Renate Reinsve), his attractive new neighbor, being one of the few people he confides in. Another neighbor, Ollie (Billy Griffith), offers words of encouragement, quoting Lady Gaga: “All unhappiness in life comes from not accepting what is.”
When presented with the opportunity to participate in a trial for an experimental drug that can “heal” his condition, Edward decides to take the chance. Being a handsome man brings its advantages. Now, he is recognized and appreciated at work, no longer being ignored. His colleague Nick (Owen Kline) even exclaims, “Look at this handsome man,” while holding a cutout of Edward.
..can not make you happy
Edward's newfound confidence diminishes when, during a night out for drinks with his colleagues, he is approached by Oswald, a charismatic man who, like him, was born with neurofibromatosis. Everyone is drawn to Oswald's charm, including Ingrid, much to Edward's dismay.
The official synopsis states, "Edward, an aspiring actor, undergoes a drastic medical procedure to completely change his appearance. However, his new ideal face quickly becomes a nightmare, leading him to obsess over regaining what he has lost."
During a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter at Sundance, writer-director Aaron Schimberg pointed out that despite the perception of actor Adam Pearson being shy like his character in 2019's Chained for Life, this was not the case at all. In A Different Man, Schimberg aimed to showcase Pearson's charm through a character who is at the opposite end of the personality spectrum. Schimberg mentioned that in portraying Oswald, a very outgoing character, this role revealed a different facet of Adam.
