The Northman is going to be every bit as bloody and brutal as promised!

Robert Eggers, director of critically acclaimed films The Witch and The Lighthouse, is returning with The Northman, an epic viking revenge story set in Iceland in the 10th century. This marks the first time that Eggers, famous for his unique directing style, is directing a big-budget movie. The main cast first and foremost includes Alexander Skarsgård as bloodthirsty viking prince Amleth, who seeks revenge for his murdered father.

The cast also includes Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Willem Dafoe and Björk.

A new poster for The Northman was released a few days ago by Focus Features. In the center above the rest of the characters is Alexander Skarsgård in his role as Amleth, sword and axe in hand, staring menacingly at the audience. And if interviews with the cast and early reviews are to be believed, this is only an inkling of what the audience can expect when watching the actual movie.

”Alexander Skarsgård looks like an absolute beast” Ralph Ineson, a member of the cast, told NME. ”There’s a scene where he beats this guy in a battle; bends down and rips his throat out with his teeth, screams to the gods and he’s got his shirt off – and you think: ’My god that’s not a bodybuilder doing a scene, that’s like a proper serious actor!’ Ineson continued.

Swedish internet publication MovieZine has published the first review of The Northman, summarizing it as ”A violent beast of a movie”. The reviewer continued: ”There is no lack of graphic violence, and The Northman is definitely not for the faint-hearted”.

The Northman will be released in theaters on April 22. Check out the new poster below.
