Directed by Brazilian filmmaker Karim Aïnouz, known for his work on acclaimed films such as “Invisible Life” and “Futuro Beach,” "Motel Destino" delves into the intersecting lives of a young man fleeing his past and a woman ensnared in an abusive marriage. In an interview with magazine Variety Aïnouz characterizes the narrative as a love story, portraying the bond between a marginalized youth challenging societal norms and a woman defying patriarchal oppression.

— The love between a peripheral young man who lives against a system that wants him dead and a woman who resists the attacks of patriarchy against her own life

Set against the backdrop of Ceará, a state in northeastern Brazil and Aïnouz's own homeland, the film captures the raw beauty and harsh realities of the region. "Motel Destino" is slated to vie for the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, promising an exploration of love, resistance, and the human spirit amidst adversity
