Universal Pictures has reshuffled its release schedule, with two of its biggest animated franchises swapping dates. DreamWorks Animation’s highly anticipated “Shrek 5” is now set to hit theaters on December 23, 2026, moving from its original July 1 slot. Meanwhile, Illumination’s “Minions 3” will arrive earlier, sliding into the summer window with a release planned for July 1, 2026.

Shrek 5 is now set for a December 23, 2026 release, perfectly aligning with the franchise’s 25th anniversary. The film marks the return of beloved characters Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona, voiced once again by Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz. With over $2.9 billion in global box office earnings, as well as cultural milestones like a Broadway musical and Universal Studios attractions, the Shrek series is poised for a grand comeback, reigniting its iconic legacy.

Meanwhile, Minions 3 continues the Despicable Me franchise’s global success, which has grossed nearly $5 billion to date. Directed by Pierre Coffin, who also voices the mischievous Minions, the film will arrive on July 1, 2026, capitalizing on the summer box-office dominance of its predecessors. In addition, Universal has moved an untitled Illumination project from March to June 2027, setting up an exciting lineup of animated hits that highlight the enduring popularity of these beloved franchises.
